Out And Around Hd 209458

By William Brendan McPhillips

21st Century

So sodium is what they've gone and found
In outer space, a planet 'round a star
That may be close to us in how we're bound,
But still be out of reach by awful far.

I know how Charbonneau and Brown must feel,
I scour labels, Sodium! Ah hah!
That planet is off limits, now I seal
It lethal, like canned soup, No! Nyet! Nada!

But like good ham it teases me to taste
Its distant possibility, the kin
Of kind, essential proof against the waste,
Of existential random chance and sin;
A whole new view of life, of solitude,
Of meaning greater than mere multitude.
