Won't you help support DayPoems? Before It Became HistoryBy William Brendan McPhillips21st CenturyAround us, death, destruction, ships and planes, The whole of Europe trapped in trauma, pains As deep as human memory can tell, And still be human, brought us into hell. And yet, we lived to dance against the wind Of cruelties we felt, or saw, or sinned. We grew, we knew, with memory as guide, Against the broken innocence. We tried To recreate a noble sense of who We were, and are, and dream, and often do. The terrible, the unremembered, binds The dead and dying promises, the kinds Of swearing oaths of caring, sharing, makes Us wonder what catastrophe it takes.
