Won't you help support DayPoems? Escaping WarBy William Brendan McPhillips21st CenturyThe crows in raucous loops above us read Our minds and gathered up our ancient dread And doors and windows opened up the town To "Glory be -" and language deeper down; And then we saw this eagle of the night His cross a broken emblem breeding fright And hovering in circles circling we Were trapped in puppet movement, mimicry. At last we saw the awful creature glide To rest where nothing half his wing could hide; And free from blind allegiance came a man, Who dared to shed his honor in a plan And out of war I thought I saw a smile Erase the concept of a coward's guile.
