Star Burden

21st CenturyThe night my son appeared tattooed,
I knew things had changed.
There he was--tall, smiling, bearded, a bit lightheaded.
I saw him as if he had been born at that moment.
"Why did you do it?"
"Oh, it seemed like a good idea."
"Why a star of David?"
"Why not?"
And that was that.
Now, years later, fully a man
he bears his star casually,
high on his arm,
lighter than another burden
borne so long ago.
