Conjugating the Edge of Is

By Timothy Bovee

Born 1946

You fell from the edge of is,
tumbling through finality
into hopeless was
beyond will and might
and someday could have been.
That sad grammar.
Review your conjugations.
Return to the dreams of am.
We'll make you some room in the present tense
for the sake of a smile and your generous heart.

Addressed to my father, Keith Alan Bovee, 1921-2004
