Overflowing the Boundaries of Art

By Timothy Bovee

Born 1946

Prosody forces each line to march
As an equally folded predictable part
Of the whole, but sometimes the poet's unable to stop when the
end of the line draws nigh because the concepts are O! so
full of beauty and truth and even some love, and unlike mu-
sic and different from paint by no known rule must poetry hew to
the width of a measure or canvas' breadth, so poets can write a lit-
tle bit long if the line is slightly full of starch,
And that, Dear Heart, is the nature of art.
