Ice Water in My Veins

By Timothy Bovee

Born 1946

My hematologist probes
The tip just below the skin,
Sees the clear liquid flow,
Feels her syringe grow cold,
Hears the test tube crackle
With a sudden freeze.
"Divorcing?" she asks
With an understanding smile
And a quick jerk of the
Hand holding the needle.
"Glacier for a heart?
Remember how it was
When what I drew from you
Was warm, pulsing with life
And your heart beat red with love?
Ice water in your veins!" Her
Hair trembles in disgust.
