I Like To Think I Am

By William Brendan McPhillips

21st Century

A poet can't recuse himself, or her,
Conflicted though he be, or she be, by
Entwinement so intense it might defer
All objectivity to things that fly.

Blue bottle, dragon, horse, or phantom winged
Observer of conditions human might
Make observations quite detached, un-ringed,
Aloof, un-proofed, agenda free, and right.

But not himself. Himself now being me,
And me, or I myself, am always part
Of all that falls within my conscious sea,
Placenta, place, neutrino nurtured heart,
I am, I think, because I think I am,
And if I'm wrong, and not, then what, but damn!
