When We Ran
21st Century
when we ran
we pretended our wings
could really fly
and i never navigated
quite so carefully
to trust you with
flight on this earliest
of mornings in this
coolest of breezes
how could i depend
on the stories read
in magazines and books
as charts for this course
of ours
and how could i hide
collected with grit
and stone from crumbled
chimney stacks
we'll never land i said
and i looked down
on the slow simmering boil
of the brown cobble stone
of home
