Angel Eyes Were Thine

By Brian Okabayashi

21st Century

Alas, summers gave to springs,
And springs to winter's flaws,
Dreary and cold--
A cold so mighty and scalding.
Singeing greater than if were fire:
Her heart was no longer mine.
"Your beauty stands,
Your heart shutters with
The deathly night's winter old."
I said, upon came no reply.
Her ruby lips were gray and pallid,
Sensual locks shimmering sepulchral,
And heart dead and shallow.
Everything of her I remember
Was gone.
My tears, idle tears here scream
A loss so grievous
Even Hell and I did cower:
A lovely kiss of death
As its moment soon should come.
My beauty bright whom loved I long,
What terrible fate's become?
What demonly ashes scent thine hair?
"Destiny's name is time
And the ashes are not thine."
Here quickly she made espouse.
Give all to love or now will die,
Tears not only mine.
Mankind's sorrow with me shar'd
A saintly faade gave light:
Angel eyes were thine.
