When

By Frederick Kambemba Yamusangie

21st Century

When we were crying,
We were told not to cry

When we were laughing,
We were told not to laugh

When we were eating,
We were told not to eat

Even when we were reading
We were told not to do so…

So, what did they want?
Nothing special,
Nothing particular,
Just for us to do whatever they like.
But not for us to do our own will

That's what happens to those who become
Orphans in Zaire
Believe me, I know what I am talking about.
