This Beautiful Valley

By Kate Watkins Furman

21st Century

The valley slumbers, now, in peace,
For in her heart she knows,
The icy wind's the lullaby
That brings the winter snows.

The evergreens with frosted crowns
Bow low to storms that pass,
That brush their boughs in crystal ice
And turn the lake to glass.

The great brown bear is fast asleep,
I hear the snowbirds trill,
The proud gray wolf wails out his song
Across the frozen hill.

December's moon's an orb of ice
That sends her twinkling light
Down to the earth, beneath the stars
To turn it dazzling white.

And all my stumbling soul can do
Is breathlessly look on,
And wonder at it's loveliness
Before the night is gone.

The work of a majestic hand
Is everywhere I gaze,
And everything that hand has made
Looks back at Him with praise !
