Columbia's Seven

By William Brendan McPhillips

21st Century

The grief is ours. The future will define
Accomplishment achieved, heroic deed
Done to advance us all, the human line,
The reach beyond the mere apparent need.

How easy to escape the day's debate
As passive voyeurs on the field and court,
But these, these sacred seven challenged fate
To open heaven, science, sift and sort.

The curiosity that took them out
Beyond all we on Earth have thought to own
Must on the journey back allow us tout
The glories Earth imbeds in soil and stone;
The coming home awakens that delight
We humans trust to overcome all fright.
